Chewy's Story: Rescue Dog and His Adventurous Spirit

Meet Chewy: The Senior Rescue Dog Who Refused to Slow Down

Spend any time cycling through St. Petersburg, Florida, and you might spot a small brown dog perched up front on a bike, surveying the world with the calm authority of someone who has absolutely earned his place there. That's Chewy — neighbourhood legend, seasoned traveller, and one of the most resilient dogs you'll ever hear about.

Chewy in his element — front row on every ride.

His story didn't begin with bike rides and sunshine. More than eleven years ago, Chewy was found on the streets of Texas — injured and alone, likely hit by a car. He entered his family's life as a medical foster, requiring reconstructive surgery on one of his back legs. Over the years that followed, he also underwent two hernia surgeries and chest surgery. Each time, he recovered. Each time, he came back ready for more.

A DNA test eventually put a name to what his family already knew: 50% poodle, 50% chihuahua — though they mostly just call him their little brown dog. Now between 13 and 14 years old, Chewy has hiked in the Colorado Rockies, explored islands in the Pacific Northwest, paddleboarded in Florida, and spent years on the road full-time. The outdoors has always been his natural habitat.

A Diagnosis That Changed Everything

Around two years ago, something shifted. Almost overnight, Chewy lost the use of his back legs. The culprit was IVDD — intervertebral disc disease — a condition in which spinal discs rupture and compress the spinal cord. It's particularly common in small and long-bodied breeds, and it can appear with very little warning.

Emergency surgery gave him back his mobility. But his neurologist was firm about the rules of recovery: no upright carrier positions, no suspension, nothing that placed strain on his spine. For a dog who had spent over a decade in motion, it felt like the end of an era. His family, however, had other ideas.

Chewy out on the road again.

Finding a Safe Way Back to Adventure

That's when they discovered the BuddyRider® pet bike seat. For Sarah, it was, in her own words, "such a gift." Most pet carriers and backpacks hold dogs in an upright or suspended position — exactly what Chewy's spine couldn't handle. The BuddyRider® works differently: it allows dogs to sit in a low, natural position with their weight evenly supported and no pressure on the spine.

Chewy adapted to it almost straight away. On longer rides, he's been known to drift off to sleep, rocked gently by the movement of the bike beneath him.

"It's given him a way to keep doing something he loves — cruising around town with us, watching the world go by, getting fresh air," says Sarah. "At this stage in his life, experiences mean everything. The BuddyRider® has let us keep including him in our adventures, safely."

Still Out There, One Ride at a Time

These days, Chewy is still a regular on the streets of St. Petersburg — nose lifted into the breeze, eyes tracking every passerby, charming anyone who gets close enough to say hello. "He really is such a little treasure," says Sarah. "We're so grateful to have found a way for him to keep enjoying the outdoors."

Chewy's journey is proof that adventure doesn't have an expiry date. Sometimes it just needs a new route. Let's go, Chewy.
